Runner (4 to 6 months' contract) - Geylang

The BBC’s Natural History Unit is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Runner to support our camera team on location shoots for a major series partly based in Singapore. This is not an entry-level role; we are looking for a technically capable runner with hands-on camera experience and a solid grounding in natural history filmmaking.

This is a physically demanding position requiring resilience, logistical awareness, strong inter-personal skills and technical ability. You’ll be working closely with the camera operator in often challenging circumstances across Singapore – from dense rainforests to the urban jungle – and expected to perform across sometimes long, intense shoot days.

This is a short-term contract for a period around 4 - 6 months, subject to further extension if required.

Main Responsibilities:

• Support the camera operator with setup, pack down, and general shoot logistics
• Manage and transport camera equipment safely through difficult terrain and varying climates
• Assist with basic camera operation and maintenance
• Log and track kit use and condition in the field
• Ensure batteries are charged, media is managed, and backups are secure
• Support location logistics including transport coordination, basecamp setup, and maintaining team welfare
• Work closely with the UK-based production team to anticipate needs and adapt to the unpredictability of natural history filming
• Engage members of the public about the project and maintain cordial relationships with nearby residents
• Maintain UpToDate field notes and ID sheets for the featured animals.

Essential:

• Proven on-location runner experience within natural history or factual content
• Strong technical knowledge of camera systems (e.g. RED, Sony, ARRI, long-lens, drone, gimbal setups)
• Physically fit and able to carry heavy kit over long distances and challenging terrain
• Experience working in tropical and/or remote environments
• Proven ability to maintain strong relationships with camera operators for long durations (months)
• Proven ability to identify individual primates in a wild setting, and to identify long-tailed macaque behaviours
• Proven ability to identify individual smooth-coated otters and knowledge of their behaviour
• Proactive and calm under pressure, with excellent communication skills
• Eligible to work in Singapore

Desirable:

• Knowledge of Southeast Asian wildlife and ecosystems
• First aid certification
• Field first aid / safety or survival training
• Able to capture world class stills of wildlife, including portraits and animal behaviours
• Production management skills, including:
• Managing bystanders and maintaining a secure filming environment
• Facilitating positive communication and coordination between local authorities and the camera crew
• Familiarity with UK production paperwork such as risk assessments, call sheets, and release forms
