Job title: Systems Engineer (Backend)
Salary: $4,000 – $5,000, 5 days a week

Location: Orchard

Key Responsibilities

You will be responsible for developing and maintaining robust loT/OT infrastructure that enables real-time environmental monitoring across Singapore. This includes integrating diverse sensor networks, ensuring reliable data collection and processing, and creating scalable solutions that support NEA's environmental protection initiatives.

You will work closely with cross-functional tear to deliver systems that enhance Singapore's environmental monitoring capabilities.

  1. Full-Stack IoT Development & System Integration
Design and develop end-to-end IoT solutions, encompassing backend cloud services (serverless and serverful), frontend data transformation interfaces, and sensor/device integration. Leverage industrial protocols (Modbus, OPC-UA) and edge computing platforms commonly deployed in Singapore’s smart building, manufacturing, and infrastructure sectors.

Maintain OpenAPI documentation to facilitate interoperability across public and private sector systems.

  1. Hardware-Software Validation, Cybersecurity & Compliance

Conduct rigorous integration testing and impact analysis for hardware changes, ensuring alignment with Singapore’s regulatory landscape—including PDPA for data protection and IMDA standards for connected devices. Apply cybersecurity best practices consistent with CSA guidelines to maintain system hygiene and protect critical OT environments.

  1. Cloud Infrastructure, Performance Optimisation & Reliability
Manage hybrid cloud infrastructure with emphasis on cost-effectiveness and scalability—key considerations in Singapore’s high-cost data centre environment. Implement role-based access controls, proactive monitoring, and alerting systems to ensure high availability.

Troubleshoot and optimise system performance to support mission-critical applications in sectors such as transport, utilities, or public housing.

  1. Stakeholder Engagement & Agile Delivery

Collaborate closely with management, end users, and cross-functional teams to align technical solutions with business goals. Gather user feedback iteratively to refine features, reflecting the collaborative, fast-paced nature of Singapore’s technology projects in both government agencies and enterprise environments.

At least 2 years of development, implementation and/or maintenance of sensor-related systems/platforms in production environment

At least 1 year of sensor / loT device integration as part of the loT / OT system implementation

Experience in deployment, maintenance and integration of loT / OT systems would be an advantage, including AWS loT Greengrass, Azure loT Edge, industrial protocols (RS-485, Modbu RTU, ModbusTCP), interoperability standards (OPC-UA), embedded protocols (12C, SPI, UART, CAN), edge computing and embedded systems integration.

Proficient in programming and scripting such as C++, Python, Net, Java etc.

Experience in serverless computing platforms (e.g. Lambda) or container technologies / orchestration (e.g. Docker) would be an advantage * Good working knowledge of DevOps in hybrid cloud setup

Strong technical aptitude, including excellent troubleshooting and communications skills

Strong interest in emerging loT and OT technologies, with the ability to proactively and independently acquire technical skills through on-the-job exposure

Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced and complex work environment

Relevant industry certification in systems engineering would be an advantage
