Job Title: Research Fellow – 3D-Printed Acoustic and Antimicrobial Devices

Position Overview:

We are seeking a talented and motivated Research Fellow to join a multidisciplinary team focused on the design and development of 3D-printed acoustic and antimicrobial devices. This position combines expertise in electrical engineering, materials science, and additive manufacturing to create next-generation functional devices with applications in biofilm control, structural health monitoring, medical technologies, and beyond.

The role emphasizes the integration of acoustic transduction elements (e.g., ultrasound, surface acoustic waves) with customizable, 3D-printed geometries and antimicrobial functionality, enabling compact and efficient devices for both lab and field applications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and fabricate 3D-printed devices that integrate acoustic elements and antimicrobial materials, using FDM, SLA, or resin-based printing techniques.
  • Develop acoustic modules, such as piezoelectric transducers or resonant structures, and incorporate them into printed designs.
  • Simulate and optimize acoustic wave propagation, structural resonances, and device performance using FEM tools (e.g., COMSOL Multiphysics, ANSYS).
  • Evaluate device performance through laboratory experiments, including acoustic output characterization, antimicrobial efficacy, and material stability.
  • Collaborate across disciplines to support application-specific prototyping and integration.
  • Publish results in high-quality peer-reviewed journals and contribute to grant proposals and patents.
  • Mentor students and contribute to lab management activities as needed.

Qualifications:

Essential:

  • PhD in electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, materials science, acoustics, or a related field.
  • Experience with 3D printing/additive manufacturing and CAD design.
  • Strong foundation in acoustic systems, ultrasound, or wave propagation modeling.
  • Familiarity with antimicrobial materials or coatings.
  • Strong publication record and excellent written/oral communication skills.

Desirable:

  • Experience with piezoelectric materials and electromechanical systems.
  • Proficiency in multiphysics simulation tools (e.g., COMSOL, ANSYS).
  • Knowledge of polymer composites and functional material integration.
  • Exposure to sensing, medical device development, or environmental applications.

Why Join Us:

  • Work at the intersection of materials, acoustics, and digital manufacturing.
  • Access state-of-the-art fabrication and characterization facilities.
  • Join a collaborative, high-impact research environment with strong academic and industry linkages.
  • Opportunity for translational research and technology commercialization.

Application Instructions:

Please submit the following documents to the application portal:

  1. A cover letter detailing your research background and interest in the position
  2. Curriculum vitae with full publication list
  3. Contact details of three referees
