We are now looking for a highly skilled and creative Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join our team and become an integral part of shaping our exciting journey in the development of our cleaning robots. This role requires a strategic thinker who can drive cross-functional collaboration, facilitate discussions between technical and non-technical stakeholders whilst fostering a culture of engineering excellence.The successful candidate is also expected and responsible for hands-on design work, ensuring the highest standards in reviewing team deliverables and maintaining structured progress updates for department heads.
What you will do- Develop and implement effective solutions to complex and most challenging engineering features and components of a fully autonomous cleaning robot
- Work with a team of design engineers in the development of new and existing robotic hardware products, ensuring adherence to project timelines and quality standards
- Take ownership of the end-to-end design process, from concept generation to prototyping, validation and testing, and final product release
- Rapid prototyping of design ideas using fabrication methods such as 3D printing, laser cutting, sheet metal to test and validate multiple concepts
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including mechanical, electrical, and software engineers, to ensure seamless integration of hardware components
- Conduct thorough research and analysis to identify design requirements and engineering constraints, balancing factors such as functionality, manufacturability, and cost-effectiveness
- Utilize CAD software and other design tools to create detailed 3D models and engineering drawings, ensuring the accuracy and feasibility of designs
- Execute DFM on parts for injection moulding, sheet metal fabrication, welding and machining.
- Create and maintain accurate engineering documentation, including drawings, schematics, and bills of materials (BOMs) to efficiently transition the product into production
- Perform risk assessments and implement appropriate mitigation strategies to address potential design challenges and ensure safety, quality and reliability from a subsystem and component level
- Collaborate with suppliers and manufacturers to source components, evaluate production feasibility, and ensure compliance/adherence with design specifications
- Stay updated with the latest industry trends and advancements in robotics hardware, incorporating innovative solutions and technologies into product designs
- Provide technical support and guidance to the production team during manufacturing, troubleshooting any design-related issues, and ensuring successful subsystem assembly
- Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Design, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in Mechanical Design Engineering or a related field
- Experience in product development, with a strong understanding of different methodologies such as Agile, Stage-Gate, Lean Product Development, and Design Thinking
- Ability to utilize rapid prototyping to great effect, producing low-fidelity prototypes from 3D printing to validate ideas
- Proficient in using SolidWorks
- Experience in new product introduction (NPI), as well as defining, managing, or launching new functionality at a technology company
- Operations experience in rolling out hardware or robotic products is preferred
- Deep expertise in mechanical design, manufacturing methodologies and material selection
- Proficient in material selection strategies for plastic and metals; considering factors of manufacturability, cost-efficiency, corrosion resistance and UL-94 flame requirements
- Experience with supply chain operations such as vendor sourcing and supplier qualification using industry-recognized methodologies (e.g., Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, APQP, PPAP)
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, employing structured decision-making frameworks such as DFMEA and root cause analysis
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, adept at bridging the gaps between technical and non-technical teams
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic team-oriented environment whilst maintaining high standards of execution
