Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Responsible for the technical leadership, preparation, operation, troubleshooting, and post-event management of all broadcast systems across HD, 4K, IP, baseband, remote production, flypack, and OB truck environments. Ensure every project is technically prepared before deployment, operationally stable during transmission, and fully controlled after completion, while maintaining the highest standards of engineering reliability, client confidence, and broadcast excellence.
General Responsibilities- Develop and implement the long-term engineering strategy for OB trucks, flypacks, IP systems, remote production workflows, and technical infrastructure.
- Plan future technology upgrades including HD → 4K → IP migration, remote production capabilities, system redundancy, and operational scalability.
- Lead technical standardisation across multiple trucks, flypacks, facilities, and regional operations.
- Review and approve engineering system architecture, technical specifications, and major infrastructure decisions.
- Lead, supervise, mentor, and develop Junior Engineers in the setup, operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of broadcast video, audio, intercom, routing, transmission, IP, and baseband systems across OB trucks, flypacks, and remote production environments.
- Full people management responsibility for engineering staff including recruitment, onboarding, training plans, performance reviews, succession planning, and disciplinary management.
- Approve leave planning, shift coverage, guarantee assignments, and manpower allocation across projects.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the latest outside broadcast technologies, including HD/4K workflows, IP systems, remote production solutions, baseband infrastructure, audio/video routing, and broadcast control systems.
- Guide Junior Engineers in reading and interpreting technical drawings, AutoCAD layouts, signal flow diagrams, video/audio schematics, patching plans, and infrastructure documentation, while coordinating technical training and development.
- Establish and enforce structured engineering processes for equipment testing, project preparation, deployment readiness, post-event evaluation, and system restoration.
- Develop clear technical escalation procedures for resolving engineering faults during projects, ensuring rapid troubleshooting and minimal operational disruption.
- Maintain all engineering environments including OB trucks, flypacks, warehouses, workshops, engineering stations, and remote production facilities to ensure cleanliness, safety, compliance, and operational readiness.
- Ensure compliance with all engineering procedures, operational standards, and Health & Safety guidelines specific to live production and outside broadcast environments.
- Work closely with the Head of Engineering to improve OB system designs, truck readiness, flypack configurations, remote production workflows, and technical deployment efficiency.
- Monitor the physical condition and technical performance of all broadcast systems and equipment, providing maintenance reports, upgrade recommendations, and replacement planning where necessary.
- Manage and oversee mobile unit operations, ensuring preventive maintenance, technical reliability, troubleshooting, and smooth execution of video and audio signal distribution during live broadcasts.
- Create, maintain, and manage preventive maintenance schedules for all critical systems including cameras, audio consoles, vision mixers, routing, intercom, transmission systems, and IP infrastructure.
- Test, prepare, evaluate, install, configure, and upgrade OB-specific video, audio, HD/4K, IP, remote production, and baseband systems prior to deployment for live productions.
- Assign technical preparation tasks to engineering team members to ensure all equipment is tested, documented, and deployed ready within project deadlines set by the Technical Manager.
- Adjust preparation schedules based on project complexity, technical requirements, available manpower, and operational priorities.
- Participate in client meetings, contractor coordination, technical discussions, venue inspections, and site recce visits as required for project planning and execution.
- Prepare a comprehensive Engineering Book for each project, including signal flow diagrams, system architecture, truck layouts, patching plans, IP addressing, equipment allocation, transmission paths, backup plans, and technical notes.
- Ensure all required spare equipment, redundancy systems, backup paths, and contingency plans are prepared prior to deployment.
- Verify all flypack systems, truck integrations, and remote production links are fully tested and operational before project mobilisation.
- Provide senior technical support during live OB events, ensuring immediate response to issues affecting video, audio, HD/4K workflows, IP routing, remote production systems, transmission paths, comms, and technical infrastructure, including rotational shift support where required.
- Ensure all broadcast equipment and systems are functioning optimally throughout the event, troubleshooting faults quickly and escalating major issues to the Technical Manager / Unit Manager with clear technical reporting and resolution plans.
- In the absence of the Unit Manager, liaise directly with clients, venue technical teams, and contractors to ensure all technical requirements are met and clearly communicated to the internal support teams.
- Keep the Technical Manager / Unit Manager fully informed of all technical issues, client requests, operational risks, and engineering action throughout the project.
- Monitor equipment safety, technical risks, and operational hazards during live events and report any concerns immediately.
- Safeguard company assets, technical reputation, and professional standards by ensuring proper equipment handling, technical discipline, and strong client-facing representation.
- Support the completion of fault reports, incident reports, technical logs, and TX reports with accurate technical details, root cause analysis, and recommendations.
- Ensure backup systems, redundancy paths, and failover plans remain fully available and operational throughout production.
- Oversee the safe de-rigging, return, verification, and proper storage of all video, audio, and broadcast systems following project completion.
- Supervise all returning equipment is physically checked, tested, and verified against dispatch records, packing lists, and technical allocation sheets.
- Assist the Technical Manager in preparing post-project technical reports, crew reports, TX reports, and engineering lessons learned documentation.
- Provide technical feedback to the Head of Engineering / MD regarding overall system performance, failures, client feedback, and improvement opportunities.
- Complete Fault Report Forms for all identified equipment failures, missing items, damage, recurring technical issues, and repair requirements.
- Tests, troubleshoots, repair, and coordinate service support for any equipment flagged during the project.
- Implement corrective actions and technical improvements based on post-project reports, fault analysis, and engineering reviews.
- Update maintenance schedules, asset records, repair histories, and engineering documentation to ensure continuous operational readiness and future deployment
- Oversee engineering ownership of the Fixed Asset Register (FAR), ensuring asset accuracy, lifecycle planning, depreciation alignment, and insurance coverage.
- Lead asset replacement strategy based on failure history, repair cost trends, utilisation, and commercial impact.
- Approve major repairs, upgrades, disposals, and technical write-offs.
- Monitor engineering department OPEX including repairs, subcontractors, maintenance contracts, consumables, and outsourced technical support.
- Review project engineering costs and identify cost leakage, inefficiencies, and opportunities for margin improvement.
- Support project profitability reviews from an engineering cost perspective.
- Support Sales and Commercial teams during major bids by validating technical scope and resource planning.
- Attend client meetings for high-value projects, major technical escalations, and strategic account relationships.
- Work directly with Operations, Production, Finance, Warehouse, and senior management to align technical planning with commercial priorities.
- Represent Engineering in executive planning meetings, project reviews, and management operational discussions.
- Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Broadcast Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, or related field
- Minimum 8–15 years of experience in broadcast engineering or live production environments
- At least 3–5 years in a leadership or managerial role managing engineering teams
- Proven experience in OB operations, live events, or remote production environments
