Job Summary:
The Supervisor of Lorry Mechanics is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the workshop, ensuring that all lorries and heavy vehicles are maintained and repaired to the highest standards. The role involves supervising mechanics, scheduling maintenance tasks, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, managing parts inventory, and liaising with management to minimize vehicle downtime.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervision & Team Management
Lead, supervise, and coordinate the activities of lorry mechanics and workshop staff.
Provide training, guidance, and performance evaluations to ensure high-quality work.
Ensure adherence to standard operating procedures and safety guidelines.- Vehicle Maintenance & Repairs
Oversee inspections, diagnostics, repairs, and servicing of lorries and heavy vehicles.
Approve completed repair work and ensure vehicles meet operational standards.
Plan preventive maintenance schedules to reduce breakdowns.- Workshop Operations
Allocate jobs to mechanics based on skills and workload.
Monitor turnaround time for repairs and service.
Ensure proper use of tools, equipment, and facilities.- Inventory & Parts Management
Monitor and manage spare parts and consumables inventory.
Ensure timely procurement of parts to avoid delays in repairs.
Control costs and reduce wastage in the workshop.- Compliance & Safety
Ensure all repairs comply with company policies, road transport regulations, and safety standards.
Maintain accurate records of vehicle service history and maintenance logs.
Implement and enforce health, safety, and environmental policies in the workshop.- Reporting & Communication
Prepare reports on vehicle condition, breakdown trends, and maintenance costs.
Liaise with drivers, operations teams, and management regarding vehicle issues.
Recommend improvements in processes and equipment to enhance efficiency.
Qualifications & Skills:
Diploma/Certificate in Automotive Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in heavy vehicle maintenance, with at least 1–2 years in a supervisory role.
Strong technical knowledge of lorries, diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and diagnostics tools.
Excellent leadership, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
Knowledge of safety regulations and preventive maintenance practices.
Working Conditions:
Workshop environment with exposure to noise, oil, and heavy machinery.
May require occasional travel for breakdown assistance.
Must be available for emergencies outside normal working hours.
