Job Description

The National University of Singapore invites applications for Research Assistant for Geroprotectors in Reproductive Ageing in Professor Brian Kennedy’s Centre for Healthy Longevity (CHL) lab in Healthy Longevity Translational Research Programme, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.

CHL focuses on translational research targeting healthy aging, with particular emphasis on the use of repurposed drugs and natural compounds to improve reproductive healthspan. Model organisms include Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) and mice. This position is offered on a one-year contract, with the possibility of renewal based on performance and funding.

Purpose of the post

The Research Assistant (RA) will be responsible to, and work closely with, the Principal Investigator and study team members to ensure the rigorous execution of experimental protocols and timely progression of project milestones. The RA’s role will be to screen for compounds that will increase reproductive health using the C.

elegans model, and to study the effects of the compounds with aged mice models.

Main duties and responsibilities

The Research Assistant will work closely with the team to:

  1. Perform large-scale compound screening using the C. elegans model;
  2. Conduct mechanistic investigation on hit compounds in C. elegans;
  3. Manage and maintain the mouse colony, including:
  • Ensuring sufficient feed
  • Monitoring animal health and breeding status
  • Tracking estrus cycles
  • Performing weaning and basic phenotyping
  • Conducting downstream biochemical and molecular assays
  1. Carry out literature reviews, data analysis and detailed documentation of experimental results and project progress;
  2. Maintain the highest standard of professional conduct and documentation practices in accordance with institutional policies and procedures;
  3. Assist with any other duties of a similar nature that are delegated by the Principal Investigator.

Qualifications

The applicant should:

  1. Have a Bachelor’s degree with good results in Life Sciences, Biomedical Sciences or related disciplines, with a strong academic track record;
  2. Be able to work independently and in a team, have an investigative nature, exercise sound judgment and handle multiple tasks with precision and accountability;
  3. have strong organizational and documentation skills, attention to detail and scientific curiosity
  4. Be a highly motivated team player with good communication skills, and willingness to learn and take initiative;
  5. Previous experiences with laboratory animals, particularly mice, is strongly preferred. The role involves extensive hands-on work with mice.
