About the Role
We’re looking for a seasoned storyteller with strong editorial instincts, leadership skills, and a flair for spotting the stories others miss. As Assistant Editor (Features), you’ll steer one of our most important pillars — original, impactful, and hyperlocal features that resonate with our readers.
You’ll work closely with our editor and correspondents to ideate, refine, and execute standout stories — from quirky profiles to thoughtful community deep dives. Beyond editing, you’ll help the editor shape the editorial direction of this pillar, mentor junior writers, and help bring ideas to life.
Job Responsibilities:
- Help lead the content stream and drive the site’s editorial vision
- Collaborate with writers to pitch bold, unconventional, and timely feature ideas
- Edit and shape longform features with a strong sense of structure, style, and storytelling
- Ensure stories are well-reported, fact-checked, and written with colour and clarity
- Work closely with the correspondent (features) to guide, support, and elevate their reporting
- Monitor trends, cultural shifts and public sentiment to surface story opportunities
- Collaborate with the social team to creatively package and extend features across platforms
- Jump in to write original pieces when needed
- Help edit daily news stories when needed
- Track content performance and use insights to shape future editorial direction
Who we’re looking for:
You should be someone who:
- Has at least 4-5 years of experience in news, digital media, or a related field, with team leadership experience.
- Reads widely and thinks critically
- Is passionate about news, people, and public affairs
- Writes and edits with clarity, confidence, and flair
- Has a strong news instinct and creative eye for stories that spark conversation
- Understands social media and digital storytelling, and know how to shape stories for social
- Is interested in helping audiences make sense of a complex world
- Is resourceful and productive
- Enjoys mentoring others and bringing out the best in a team
- Thrives in a dynamic newsroom and can balance both day-to-day and long-range editorial work
- Is comfortable with shift work and irregular hours, including evenings and weekends as needed
Bonus points if you:
- Are comfortable in the field and don’t mind chasing leads or talking to strangers
- Are calm under pressure, and decisive in a breaking news moment
- Are plugged into local culture, subcultures, or niche communities
- Have a sense of humour and positive attitude
