Drs. Caroline Wee and Ajay Mathuru are looking for a qualified individual to be employed at the level of a Laboratory Officer. The candidate will provide technical expertise and assistance on a variety of basic and translational projects, and administrative/logistical upkeep pertaining to lab operations.

On-the-job mentorship will be provided to help the candidate achieve their personal and career goals.

The overall programme will focus on improving aquaculture health and productivity. The individual will be working with an inter-disciplinary, multi-institutional, international team of scientists to investigate the nutritional, microbiome, and neurogenetic factors regulating fish stress, metabolism, and immunity.

They will also assist in the husbandry of zebrafish and multiple farmed species (Asian sea bass, red snapper).

Job scope:

  • Fish colony management including genotyping and husbandry , sample collection (e.g fin clip, scales, mucus, blood) and organ dissection
  • Perform molecular lab assays (e.g. ELISA)
  • Accurate monitoring and reporting of experimental results and research findings.
  • Fish brain and behavioural phenotyping experiments;
  • Routine lab techniques: molecular biology (cloning, DNA, RNA extraction), making buffers and reagent preparation.
  • Administrative work related to animal protocol, equipment maintenance, electronic and physical record keeping, and laboratory safety.

Must be comfortable with:

  • Some weekend work, as it may be required for feeding and basic maintenance
  • Traveling to offshore fish farms or other institutions when necessary

Job Requirements:

  • Diploma in aquaculture, marine science, biology, biotechnology or related field.
  • Strong experience in fish husbandry, handling, sample collection techniques.
  • 1 or more years of relevant research experience, including experience with molecular biology techniques.
  • Responsible, focused and organized; able to tolerate routine work with interest in improving techniques and productivity.
  • A team player who works well with others and enjoys collaboration.
  • Genuine interest in aquaculture research or in pursuing a future career in research
